How to Claim Insurance on Your Damaged Roof

Rachael Eslao • April 22, 2021

The ins and outs on how to claim home insurance on your damaged roof in your area

A storm or other event may damage your roof, prompting a desire to repair it immediately to protect your family and possessions. However, it is important to assess the extent of the damage and prove its cause before repairing your roof to ensure you get the most out of your Home Insurance claim in your area.

It is important to check your specific homeowner's insurance policy to ensure it covers roof damage. Many insurance companies consider roof damage as being as important as you do.

Many insurance companies cover your roof from perils such as:
  • Fire
  • Hail Damage
  • High Winds
  • Vandalism
  • Lightning strikes
  • Falling objects
  • Some Natural Disasters
Roof damage is probably not covered if:
  • If your roof is 10-20 years old or older
  • Your roof has not been maintained
  • Damage caused by the homeowner intentionally or by accident
  • States where hurricanes, earthquakes, and hail storms are common
Filling Your Home Insurance Claim on Your Damaged Roof
Your homeowner's insurance company will require that you file a claim for roof damage. The process of filing a claim can differ slightly depending on the insurer but the steps are generally as follows:

  • Make a note of the damage. Before repairing any damage to your roof, take as many pictures as possible, including the cause of the damage. Take these pictures even before you make any temporary repairs such a tarping your roof (link roof tarping).
  •  Get in touch with your insurance company. Besides, telling your insurance company that you have roof damage. Confirm whether the damage and cause are covered by your policy and how long you have to file that claim. Make sure to check if emergency tarping is covered by your policy too.
  •  The paperwork must be filed. You must submit the paperwork to your insurance company to initiate the claim process.
  • Receipts for repairs should be saved. Keep any receipts that involve repairing your roof that included if you or a professional made repairs. Before you hire a professional to repair the roof, make sure the insurance company approves the claim since they may have a list of contractors they approve, and going outside this list may mean they won’t cover the cost. Insurance companies may reimburse you for a hotel stay if your home becomes uninhabitable.
  • Insurance adjusters are likely to visit. Your insurance company may send out a roof assessor who will take lots of pictures of the roof damage, what caused it, and the exterior of your home. To determine the cost of a roof repair or replacement, the adjuster works with the insurance company and the roof repair company.
  •  Be aware of your rights to appeal. Insurance companies may deny your claim, reimburse you for less than the repair or replacement cost, or dispute the claim. You may hire a public adjuster to assess the damage and you can then appeal the payout amount.
